Midwinter

A recent woodblock print,  4 colours.
I'm enjoying working on a smaller scale however I'm often stumped for a while on how to move forward with a print. Sometimes my head just needs to be in the right place.

Winter Robin 11 x 15cm

I'm still working on this but it's nearly there. I wanted a really white paper to give the impression of snow so found some sheets of hakuraku which seems to work well.

Two new woodblock prints

Painted Lady 11 x 15cm

Red Admiral 11 x 15cm

Here are two recent woodblock prints.

Back in August I did a four day course with Paul Furneaux at Edinburgh Printmakers. The course was excellent, it was wonderful to watch Paul as he worked and easier to take in than learning from a book.

I'm finding registration a lot easier with smaller work.

Puffins

I've been looking through some sketches made on the Isle of May back in June 2004 and began to compose this painting from charcoal sketches I made of puffins on the island.

I thought it might be a good time to add this to my blog and show how the piece develops over the next few weeks. I'm working in oil on canvas, with a limited palette, brushes, palette knife and charcoal.
